It took me some time to name this blog article. To begin with, I didn’t know if I just stayed with the white lace maxi dress. And so on, if I should mention my fashion design skills. Or just say it’s a vintage-inspired dress.
Wondering why so much thinking about a blog post name?
Well, because this article is not just about a dress. But about one of those moments in life that brings us — you and me, so much joy talking about it.
What is that? Well, you get to find it out reading this article to the end.
Have you had one of those moments where you feel proud of your creations?
If you’re a fine artist, writer, photographer, designer, or — “a creative person.” Surely, you know how joyful and fortunate those moments are. Those gifted moments build up more meaning in our lives. Thus, we feel like living more thoroughly during a creative time than the rest of life.
And you, don’t tell yourself you’re not a creative person. Indeed, I believe we’re all creators and designers in life. In fact, you can start creating anything you want. Any time, anywhere. Or your own fashion designs, as I did with this white maxi dress.
The Vintage-Inspired DIY white lace maxi dress. How did it start?
A friend gave me this white vintage 100% cotton handmade Battenburg lace tablecloth. It’s a beautiful hand-embroidered fabric. Though, she got it as a wedding gift. But she never used it because it is white. It’s easy to get dirty and hard to clean it up. “Too much work,” she told me. Also, she doesn’t like lace stuff.
On the contrary, I love lace! I’m obsessed with it. And It’s hard to resist not buying clothes made with this fabric. It can be a trend or not; it doesn’t matter to me. I always have something lace hanging in my closet — a white lace maxi dress: a lace skirt, a lace top, and lace accessories. Oh, I have a white lace umbrella too. And, lace never gets outdated for my style. Also, lace fabrics can reveal your feminine side, sensuality and looks romantic. Oh, wait. Did I give you the impression that I’m romantic? Ups, I got you wrong on that. Not that romantic.
The final — from table cover to a maxi dress
So, when I put my eyes on that white table cloth, I only could see a maxi dress made of it. Of course, I’m wearing it. I have to say, I basically went home that day wrapped in the tablecloth. I’m not exaggerating. And before I got home, I already had the design sketched drowned in my mind.
Now, I needed someone to sew it. I’m good at designing clothes, but not too good at sewing. Then, I asked a friend if she could make the dress for me. For my excitement, she said, “YES.” Took her almost a week to figure out how to cut that fabric without damage the lace details and deliver the dress based on my design. As you can imagine, this dress didn’t end up cheap. It cost me a significant amount of $. But worth every penny I spent on it.
What are you?
Let’s clear up things around here.
Am I a fashion designer?
No, I’m not. I’m a jewelry designer, and that’s what I do for a living. Want to see my jewelry creations? Go to Vidart & Life boutique. You get to find unique statement jewelry designs there, and I think you’ll like it.
However, I like to play different rules, sometimes. And fashion design is one of them. I haven’t been doing that lately, and I miss it a lot. Maybe I should start to do this again. Since It’s something that gives me such joy and power to my dreams. I think I just got myself back into an old hobby.
My design creativity started when I was seven. Maybe eight. I used to design my own clothes, and my mom sewed them for me. And take a guess which was my favorite outfit style back then—maxi dress, maxi skirt.
Have I told you my best friends were an anaconda and a crocodile and a Jaguar?
You think I’m kidding. Don’t you?
We moved to north Brazil, Amazonia, when I was six years old. That is to say, I grew up wild in the middle of the Amazon florets.
I had no idea what a fashion design was. Whether I was creating my own designs. Until then, there wasn’t any place to shop, and if we had a place for shopping, it was impossible to get there. So, that’s how I started a creative life. And that’s why I’m not afraid of doing hard things.
My mom is a great seamstress. She used to make most of our clothes. I remember drawing my designs and being a pain on the neck with the details, explaining how I want it to be delivered.
Hey you! I know what you are thinking… And here is the answer.
The inspiration came from the soap-operas actress outfits. Obviously, I watched tv with my parents every night.
The tv: Round, orange outside. Black and white picture. 14-inch screen. Power supply, car battery.
Can you imagine how it looks like?
It was complicated for my mom to understand my drawings. I couldn’t do it well either. (they were not too clear), but she was always very patient. In the end, she always delivered it well. I still remember my feelings about designing my own dresses. And how proud I was of myself for my outfit creations.
Why It's more than a DIY white lace Dress...
Like I mentioned before, this post is not only about a white lace maxi dress. But about letting creativity bring joy to your life. You don’t need unique places or money to be a creative person. You just need to be open to new ideas and trying to do different things.
Don’t worry about the ending results. Because wherever comes out, you can use your creativity to make it work out. And when you do that, you feel terrific and living like 1.000 years in one single moment.
